Week 5 Analysis

The movie The Proposal follows the classic formula for Romance. This movie starts just as most romantic comedies. The two main characters don't necessarily like each other but are thrown together in an akward situation and forced to not only get along but pretend they are in love. That, of course, leads to them really falling head over heals for eachother. Just after they realize that they really have formed a bond and loving relationship, something threatens to come between them. They are forced to explained to everyone why they lied and that their feelings are real now. This movie, as well as most, have several querky characters and strange situations.
The Proposal is the story of an editor-in-chief of a book publishing company that is in danger of being deported back to Canada from the US. She tells immigration and the executives at her company that she is getting married to her assistant, whom she does not get along with at all. After telling this little white lie to the executives, she then informs her assistant. He was not happy about the situation but decided to go along. He then found a way to get the upper hand. When the INS asked them to prove that they are a couple the assistant spoke up and said that they are going to spend time with his strange family in Alaska. After a few days of the average comical events they end up falling in love.
This movie plays into all emotions of the romintic comedy fan. It offers scandle, drama, romance, and comedy. It also doesn't hurt that the actors in this movie, just as most other romantic comedies, are beautiful. Romantic comedies offer something for most people. This mixture feeds all of the needs that people go to the movies to fulfill. Most people that watch romantic comedies are also drawn in because a small part of them that wishes something like this would happen to them. They are living their fanticies through the characters of these movies.

Weekly Analysis 4

Roger Federer
Heroes still exist but just might be harder to recognize because they don’t wear a cape or beat up the bad guys. In our society, the title hero is often placed on the shoulders of athletes. One athlete that could easily be labeled as a hero is tennis star Roger Federer. It’s not enough that Roger just added his name to a very short list of people that have won a title at all four major world tournaments, but on June 7, 2009 he won his first French Open giving him his 14th Grand Slam. This win allowed him to tie the current record for most Grand Slams, held by tennis great Pete Sampras. He has accomplished all of this at the age of 27. (Sports…)
Roger Federer is a native to Switzerland had has played tennis since his early childhood. He spent time competing in young tennis clubs and even left home at the age of 13 to spend time at the premier Switzerland training club. He only saw his family when he travelled home on weekends. Roger took his gave very seriously and had a very supportive family. The only real issue he ever had was the anger he had when he didn’t do something just as he had wanted. He was always very respectful to his opponents and umpires but would become horribly angry with himself. His parents taught him that that type of behavior was unacceptable. He learned how to control his feeling and sculpt his craft. (JockBios)
Roger may be one of the most famous athletes of today. It’s not because he is always in the news or every commercial that graces the television. There is no controversy surrounding him. He is a young man in his twenties with a wife and supportive family. He keeps a low profile and works hard at what he does. Roger Federer is famous because he has amazing talent and is a grateful and classy man who happens to be a great athlete.

Weekly analysis 3

Rituals always bring to mind the holidays. A big part of the holidays are the events we go to and the movies or television shows people watch. At the top of most lists for holiday rituals is, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, (Top Classic…) The cartoon version has been a family favorite since its creation in 1966. This movie appeals to young and old. The reason for this is not only the great story behind it but the fact that it has become a ritual. The audience includes current children, their parents who watched the movie as a child, and grandparents that watched with the current parents when they were children. This very mix of demographics is exactly what causes rituals to begin and stay in place.
As many rituals tend to do, the Grinch as evolved over time to appeal to a new group that may not be as interested in the old. The live action picture, The Grinch, starring Jim Carrey is a longer, more graphic look at the life of The Grinch. While this is still a family film, it is more outrageous and animated, so to speak. The more hard core side of The Grinch is portrayed and viewers really get to see what makes him tick. This film is also much longer and develops the story in a way that the animated version of the past did not. This may help to catch the attention of viewers that aren’t as interested in “a children’s cartoon”, and might not appreciate the nostalgia of the character.
This is a classic example of something that people gravitate to for a sense of familiarity and family but now with a twist. Rituals need to grow and evolve. People and families don’t remain the same forever therefore rituals can’t either. It’s nice to see that a piece of culture was able to evolve with the times as well. This might ensure that it stays in existence as part of the ritualistic culture for a while longer than it might have if people needed to rely on the same old forever.
